John W. Jones Jr. was born on July 19th, 1931 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The son of John W. Jones Sr. and Cordelia Morris, he always was interested in airplanes and flight.
John's mother passed away when he was just 15 years old. He lived with his mother and maternal grandmother, Hattie B. Morris, at 911 Green Street in Vicksburg, Mississippi until he graduated from high school. Upon graduation, he attended college at Tuskegee Institute (now University) where he majored in physical education. He was an avid tennis player and a member of Air Force R.O.T.C. throughout college. While a student at Tuskegee, he met the love of his life, Gay Audell Rials, a student in the college of nursing at Tuskegee. They married (after getting permission from the Dean of the college of nursing to marry prior to graduation) in the Chapel on the Tuskegee campus on August 1st, 1952. Following graduation, the two traveled the world, during and after John’s military service. John became a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was also in the AF Reserves. John and Gay had two children, Sherri Desseria (Jones) Tapp and John W. Jones III.
Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, John worked for the Federal Aviation Administration in California. While there, he served as an air traffic controller in Saigon, Vietnam for 18 months. He later transferred to and became the Chief of Flight Inspection at FAA in Oklahoma City. After retiring from FAA John traveled with Gay until they built their dream home in Fort Mohave, Arizona. Even in retirement, John continued to play and teach others to play tennis. He and Gay entertained quite a bit and always had a welcoming open-door for any family or friends traveling near the area.
John enjoyed taking visitors sight seeing where ever he lived. He took many on tours of the San Francisco Bay Area when they lived there, and Oklahoma City when that was where they made their home. He also took the family on vacations, driving and flying around the country. He was a man on the go most of the time. He also enjoyed all kinds of music, particularly jazz music. He an Gay also enjoyed parties and dancing together, and their travels included several cruises they took together.
